Server Seed

The server seed is the casino's secret contribution to every provably fair plinko drop. Before you place a single bet the site publishes its SHA-256 hash, freezing the seed in place, and the seed itself serves as the key in each drop's HMAC computation.

Server Seed at a Glance
Term type Casino-side secret randomness
Role in formula The key in HMAC-SHA256(serverSeed, clientSeed:nonce:cursor)
Commitment SHA-256 hash published before any bet
While active Hidden; only the hash is visible
On rotation Revealed in full so past drops can be checked
Tamper test Revealed seed must hash to the pre-round commitment

What is a server seed in plinko?

It is a long random string generated by the casino that powers the outcome of every drop you make while it is active. You never see it during play; you see only its SHA-256 fingerprint, published before your first bet.

In the fairness formula the server seed is not just another ingredient, it is the HMAC key. Your client seed and nonce form the message being signed, while the server seed does the signing. That division of labor means the casino supplies the entropy, but only inside a framework where it already promised, in writing, which entropy it would use.

How does the hash commitment stop cheating?

Publishing SHA-256(serverSeed) before betting works like a sealed envelope. The casino cannot later swap in a friendlier seed, because any substitute would produce a different hash, and finding a second seed matching the original fingerprint is computationally infeasible.

This is the "commit" half of commit and reveal. Once the hash is on your screen, the entire sequence of your future drops under that seed pair is mathematically settled; the operator can no more edit an unlucky path than it could reverse SHA-256. What remains open is your side of the equation, which is why setting your own client seed matters. The full scheme is unpacked in our provably fair entry.

What happens when a server seed is revealed?

Requesting a seed rotation retires the active server seed and discloses it in plain text. You then confirm it hashes to the earlier commitment and recompute past drops with it. A new hashed seed takes over for future bets.

Rotation is the moment the system pays off, so use it. Take the revealed seed, your client seed, and any bet's nonce to our provably fair verifier: it checks the hash match and rebuilds the ball's exact left/right path in your browser. All four sites we review run this same Stake-style lifecycle, which keeps verification identical everywhere.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why can't I see the server seed while I'm playing? +
Because you could predict every upcoming drop. With the seed, the HMAC chain is fully computable in advance, so players would bet only into winning outcomes. Hiding the seed while committing to its hash protects both sides at once.
What if a revealed server seed doesn't match its hash? +
That is cryptographic proof of tampering, not bad luck. Screenshot the commitment and the reveal, stop playing, and escalate to support and the site's licensing body. In our testing across the four partner casinos we have never observed a mismatch.
