What does a multiplier mean in plinko?
A multiplier is the fixed payout factor a bin applies to your stake. Land a $1 bet in a 26x bin and you receive $26; land it in a 0.2x bin and you receive $0.20, a partial loss.

Why do the biggest multipliers sit at the edges?
Because edge bins are the rarest outcomes. On 16 rows, each 1000x edge bin hits 1 time in 65,536 drops, while the 0.2x center bin alone catches about 19.6% of balls. Payout size mirrors improbability.
The ball takes 16 independent left/right bounces, so reaching an edge means winning the same coin flip 16 times in a row. Combined across both sides, the 1000x lands about 1 in 32,768 drops. Do bigger multipliers change the house edge?
No. Weight every multiplier by its bin probability and each standard table sums to the same 99% return. The 1000x board and the tame 16x Low board both cost you an identical expected 1% of total turnover.
Multipliers are calibrated against the bin probabilities so that expected return is constant. Chasing 1000x is not a worse deal than grinding the 16x Low table; it is the same 1% house edge paid with far bigger swings. What changes is variance, which is a preference, not an exploit.
